Bad SEO derails website!

Here’s a trap to be aware of when implementing an ‘SEO friendly’ CMS, Template or Theme on your website. Some CMS’s, Templates and Themes claim that their pages are SEO friendly – but then break the rules the very instant they are installed. 

As an example, I recently used a WordPress template that I thought handled a lot of the mundane SEO really well. Great, this will save me hours of work I thought! But after awhile of really negative SEO results and scratching my head, I began to smell a rat and investigated further.

As it turns out, the template I had installed was using a <H1> (main header) tag in the footer for the name of my site title. That would be fine, if it was the only <H1> tag on any given page. However, every page on the site also has a page title which was also assigned it’s own <H1> – and rightly so. And herein lies the problem – when any web page was opened it would compile the requested page along with the header, sidebar, footer etc (with it’s extra <H1> tag) and present it all as one page to the web browser.

Now, this meant I had two <H1> tags on the same page (as seen via the source code). One <H1> tag assigned correctly to the page title and another assigned incorrectly to the site title in the footer! This is against SEO 101 best practice as there should only ever be one <H1> tag on any given page. This simple oversight – firstly, by the WordPress template maker – and secondly by me for neglecting to pick it up (and just trusting that the template maker would ‘get it right’) – meant all the pages on my site were breaking the most basic of SEO rules! 

Well, I’m embarrassed to admit as an SEO specialist that this all went on undetected under the hood for quite some time – but I’m very happy to report that it’s all sorted now, and our SEO is safely back on track. 

It just goes to show how easily bad SEO can derail your website when the slightest little things are left undone. Fortunately, we can recover from these hiccups and a website can bounce back when you know the rules, apply them correctly and play nice!

So you think you can build a website?

No, it’s not a new reality TV show! It’s about the right way to build websites – especially very BIG websites that have 1000+ pages with a couple of dozen different templates and myriad inner page layouts to convey. Where to start? Did anyone say ’fire up Dreamweaver and start pumping out code?’

Why waste time with mockups?

OK, if you’re a small operation and the only developer and building the site for only one client – maybe you can skip all this mumbo jumbo. But, if you have (or ever hope to have) a big website redesign job with multiple stakeholders (they’re not clients anymore) – and I’m talking 20+ stakeholders with very healthy egos and project derailing abilities – you’d do well to take my advice on this one. You see, as developers we already know how all this stuff works. But your stakeholders usually don’t have a clue and are relying on you to clearly articulate to them – in a style and language they understand – how it all works. After all, if you fail to convince them of your brilliant plan, it will be scrapped anyway. So trust me on this, get into mockups, wireframing and prototyping if you want to work for BIG clients.

Okay I get it, let’s start wireframing!

Right, first we need to know a few things (actually we need to know heaps of things but we don’t have the time or space here). So, the few key things we’ll focus on here are;

  • How many pages
  • How many templates (0r master pages)
  • How many levels of navigation (IA)
  • How many page variations
    • home page layout
    • standard content page
    • product display page
    • product “more details” page
    • shopping cart page
    • thank you page (after product purchased)
    • contact us page
    • error pages
    • etc… 

All of the above needs to be defined before the creative design begins. These elements MUST be fleshed out in boring old black & white before the artists get to it – because once they do, your stakeholders will be totally absorbed and sidetracked by every shade of colour, every placeholder image, every miss spelt word, every pixel out of place and everything BUT what they should be focusing on – which is (drum roll please…), the layout. How will it work – not, how will it look & feel. Because if you go ahead and build it all shiny and new, but your users don’t have a clue how to operate it or find key information – its all money down the drain. 

Time to mock it up! 

Wireframing Once all the above is determined and everyone is in agreement with how each main page will operate, we mockup the basic wireframes containing all the key features and functionality of the site – which we will know from our requirements/ scoping document.

The mockups must be ”vanilla” representations of the website – there will be no artwork, colours or styles applied at this point – this is to keep everyone focused on the critical pre-build phase (believe me, this approach will save the project lots of money down the track).

Try before you buy… with clickable HTML prototypes

The next step we suggest is to make the wireframes clickable so your stakeholders know exactly how it will all work and flow – this tends to set their expectations and provides visibility into the end product – without getting too hung up and distracted by pretty pictures (these are still important of course, just not now). That way, when the designs are built in to the site, there won’t be any nasty surprises or basic functionality questions like ‘how does that work’? Or ‘can we move it over there?’ We want to nut all this out way before the design stage.  

A winning formula!

Once all your stakeholders have clicked the death out of the HTML prototype and all the approved amendments have been reworked – it’s finally time to hand it over to the developers and designers who will cut the code and create the look and feel respectively. The end result will be a robust, functional and beautiful website (or software) solution – built the right way, from the ground up that your users – and management will love! Win/win!

What is eLearning?

What is eLearning?

The “e” in eLearning represents the word ‘electronic’. Therefore eLearning means Electronic Learning – or more correctly; Learning facilitated by electronic delivery. Or, online (on-screen) learning. Great, now that we’ve cleared that up, lets find out what it can do for you.

What are the benefits of eLearning?

eLearning has advantages and disadvantages over traditional face-to-face learning. Some of the advantages may of course be seen as disadvantages depending on the goal of the learning outcome. Lets examine some of these.

Advantages of eLearning versus face-to-face learning

  • lower cost per head to deliver
  • convenience – the student can (at the discretion of the administrator) learn at their own pace and modules can be delivered anywhere there is a computer/ internet connection
  • progress can be automatically tracked and scored and administrators and students can be automatically notified upon successful completion
  • courses can be time based to ensure speed and accuracy in a particular module – or left untimed
  • other online tools can be integrated such as interactive 3D models, audio and movie clips, voice overs or software walkthroughs and simulations
  • detailed reports can be auto-generated and emailed to administrators (and students)
  • elearning courses and modules can be sold online

Disadvantages of eLearning versus face-to-face learning

  • no face-to-face contact. Some people prefer face-to-face delivery and personal interaction over computer based delivery
  • no instructor guidance – though automated ‘hints and tips’ carefully set to trigger when certain errors are performed can usually solve this problem
  • lack of people interaction. Though eLearning can allow for other students to be visible online in a chat room scenario

To summarise the above pro’s and con’s we could say that eLearning has the main advantage of convenience, whereas face-to-face learning has people interaction as it’s key selling point. Both have their merits. The main thing to remember is to match the desired learning outcome with the target audience.

That said, with recent advances in technology most things can be achieved online with eLearning regardless of the target audience.

How to insert a hyperlink into an email in Outlook.

If you want to send a URL or webpage hyperlink in an email. It’s a snack. Just follow below up to point 5 then copy and paste the URL directly into the body of your email message. If you need to link to local files on your hard drive or on a network drive, read on.
Sometimes we need to send a link to our colleagues of a file we’ve been working on. But how to do this? It’s not as simple as it should be and many people give up and just email the entire document. There’s a better, more elegant way to achieve this. Whilst this is not a 100% foolproof method, it will achieve the desired result in most cases.

Why won’t my hyperlink work? 

Having your default email format set to plain ”Text” or Rich Text” by default is usually the main reason this does not work. Those two formats are great for sending light weight emails – but they suck at embedding links and showing pictures etc. They’re simply not designed for it. HTML on the other hand, was designed for it and knows exactly how to handle hyperlinks. So instead of sending out ghastly hyperlinks like this > \\directory\directory\directory\directory\directory\directory\\directory\directory\directory\directory\directory\directory\directory\myfile.doc - you can embed it in a nice tidy hyperlink like this > Same, but better looking hyperlink. This way you won’t clutter up your beautiful email messages with unneccessary garbage your recipient doesn’t need to see.

Great, lets do it!

  1. First we need to ensure our email is setup by default to be created in HTML format. Do this as follows
  2. Open Outlook and go to Tools > Options > Mail Format (tab at top)
  3. Under the top section titled “Message format” see the line “Compose in this message format:”
  4. Click the drop down menu and select “HTML” 
  5. Click “OK” and we’re clear to start adding our hyperlinks into our HTML emails
  6. Now go to File > New > Mail Message (or Ctrl+N)
  7. In the body of the email message enter some text like “My new hyperlink”
  8. Now highlight that text and go to Insert > Hyperlink…
  9. From the “Type:” drop down menu, select the type of item we want to link to. In this case lets say you’re linking to a local file on your computer called “myfile.doc”
  10. Select “file:” from the Type drop down
  11. Then you will see in the next field ”URL:” there is the default setting of “file://”. Delete this and copy and paste the path to your local file. How, you say?
  12. Open Windows Explorer and click through the folders until you reach your document. The path could be very complex if you’re on a large network – but for simplicity sake lets say its ”C:\MyDocuments\Company\Team\Projects\December2010\Documents”
  13. Copy that whole path from the Address bar in Windows Explorer and paste it into the URL field in Outlook (see point 11 above)
  14. Now add one more backward slash “\” at the end of that path (in Outlook) so the path will now be “C:\MyDocuments\Company\Team\Projects\December2010\Documents\”
  15. Finally, copy and paste the actual file name to the end – after the last slash. Now our link will be “C:\MyDocuments\Company\Team\Projects\December2010\Documents\myfile.doc” 

Eureka… It works!

You will notice that the original text “My new hyperlink” in the body of the email has now turned blue. This indicates it now has an embedded hyperlink attached to it – and we’re good to go. So start sending out those hyperlinks. 
Just remember, no spamming! Play nice. :)

What’s better than Adobe Captivate?

Is there anything out there in eLearning land better than Adobe Captivate? It’s great for certain things like adding interactions, but its screen capture leaves a lot to be desired. Compared to say Techsmith’s SnagIt, Captivate is primitive.

Techsmith also has Camtasia Studio of course, but again this seems to be overkill. The Photoshop of screen recording if you will.

So what better solutions are out there? What about Articulate? It seem to be half way between Captivate and Camtasia – though not originally intended for eLearning. Interested to hear views from Multimedia Developers on their challenges and solutions.

What’s your success criteria for Social Media?

Social Media has been the darling of the online world for a couple of years now. When it first came out of the starting blocks on training wheels many of the crusty old online stalwarts (yours truly) were scornful and pessimistic and couldn’t wait to see it fall flat on its facebook – sorry – had to get that one in.  Obviously, only twits would use Twitter etc etc. Fast forward a couple of years and damn it… they’re mostly all still here!

Who is actually making money from Social Media?

A question for the companies that are investing in Social Media now; who, apart from the owners of the major social sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter etc, is actually turning a dollar from their investment?

How does your Social Media campaign stack up?

When you track your ad campaigns can you honestly attribute $X to your Social Media effort in time and money spent? Try this formula; (Hours per week doing Social Media X your hourly rate) + money spent / your monetary return. It might look like this;

  •   (10 [hours] X $50 [your rate]) + $100 [ads] / $200 [income] = $3 [per hour ROI]

When we break it down to a basic formula, the case for a large Social Media budget may not look that attractive. Social Media it seems is really a “must-have”. We humans have a tendency to want to ’keep up with the Joneses’ at all costs. If they’ve got it, we need it too! But is it worth the cost/time/effort for the return it brings?

So I’m just curious, if your company has made a financial committment to Social Media campaigns - is it actually making money for you? Or is it more a case of everyone’s doing it so we have to do it? 

Is Social Media a must-have for everyone?

I’m happy to be proven wrong here – but I’ll go out on a limb and say this; I think Social Media only suits certain types of businesses. Not every type of business. If you’re in the teen market for example – it would be pure folly to ignore Social Media as that market lives and breathes it. However, if you’re in Investment Banking, Aged Care or Lawn Mowing; is having a Twitter account really going to enhance your company or add value for your customers? 

What are your thoughts? Heck, this old dog might even learn some new tricks and become a convert if you can present a good enough argument.

How did your customers navigate to your key web page? Which links did they click to get there? 

Why does this matter? Because if you don’t know which link (or traffic source) is responsible for driving the most customers to your key web pages you may keep putting the poorest performing links online – and wonder why no sales are being made. You can easily avoid this by knowing exactly how your customers like to respond and what they are looking for on your web page – and then it’s simply a matter of presenting it the same way on every page. This will send your response rate soaring and get the phone ringing again. This is called website optimisation – or multivariate testing.

How do we optimise our web pages?

Lets say you have a web page (the source page) with three separate links – or Calls to Action (CTA) that all click through to the same destination page which we’ll say is a contact form. The source page contains these links as follows;

  1. A basic text link in the page copy
  2. An image with an embedded link
  3. A nice big glossy red button

Naturally, you want to know which link produces the best response from your website visitors – because if you knew that, you’d use the same one every time right? So are your web visitors the visual types who always click the image? Do they go for the big red button? Or do they usually click the simple text link embedded in the page copy? 

Analytics reveals all

With this question in mind you login to your favourite analytics program and look up the stats for the destination page (where you end up when the links are clicked) only to discover – you can’t tell which link was clicked because there’s only one source page – and all those links are the same! All three links on the source page go to the same destination page; so how can you tell which link was clicked the most?  Well relax, there is a simple method called tagging that will save the day.

Tag your links - know the answers!

Lets say the link to your destination page is /contact-form.html. Instead of having this exact same link on all three CTA’s – the image, the button and the text - we can add a simple query string – or tag in the code to differentiate them. In most cases the tag won’t affect the operation of the link or send visitors to an error 404 (page not found). It will simply be parsed in the web browser as the same destination link but with a descriptive end tag.

So lets break this down link by link. Your new tagged links might look like this:

  1. Text link:      /contact-form.html?=pageLink
  2. Image link:  /contact-form.html?=imageLink
  3. Button link:  /contact-form.html?=buttonLink

It’s that simple! Now when you go back to your analytics program in a few days (or after enough new clicks have been received) you will notice that the traffic sources – or path to your destination page is now separated out into three sources. The text link, the image link and the button link. You’ll nearly always find that one link stands out above the rest in terms of traffic. So if the text link turns out to be the big winner, be sure to keep doing that and you can expect your response rate to increase over time*.  

By doing this you can know for certain which is the best way to place links on your webpages. So, do your web visitors click text, images or buttons?

* This depends on enough data being available to make the metrics solid. If you don’t have enough data or hits to your site, wait until you do before making any radical changes.

Firstly, what is Search Engine Marketing?

Search Engine Marketing when done correctly, places your key web pages right in front of people that are searching for your product or service online. This is a paid ad service and ads appear instantly.

On Google, these ads appear on the right hand side of the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).  So in a nutshell, Search Engine Marketing – or SEM – is the science of marketing your product or service on Search Engines. When a web user then searches for say “sunglasses” your SEM ad will be presented on the right hand side of the search results page as shown in yellow.

Tip:: If your key product is Sunglasses, it would be obvious to target users searching for only “sunglasses”. However, if you think laterally, it may also be beneficial to target people who are searching for other related products or services such as boating, hats, fishing or anything else where sunglasses may be useful. So these could be potential key words used in search phrases like “boating sunglasses”.

Do you need SEM?

Unless your website is a household name and gets millions of hits through word of mouth – you need SEM. But is it really worth it you may ask?

Would you print 10,000 brochures and then bury them in the desert?

What sort of a crazy question is that you might be asking? Well oddly enough, many companies today have a website built then sit back and think their job is done. But when it comes to the internet, this approach would be exactly the same as if you spent  thousands of dollars printing brochures to promote your business and then drove hundreds of kilometres into a desert – and buried them! Sounds insane right? Obviously you wouldn’t expect a response from any of those buried brochures, yet this is exactly what some people do with their website by not allocating an advertising budget to promote it (through SEM). The metaphor of the brochures in the desert is meant to represent Search Engine Marketing (SEM). This is the number one way in which you can guarantee your website will be found online – albeit, in the paid search column on the right. Still great visibility and in time (with good SEO work) your site will hopefully climb up the organic rankings by default. This is the holy grail of websites – to be ranked number one in the organic search results. Arguably, if this happens you could scale back your paid ads as your visibility would be driving plenty of traffic to your site without you really trying.

When don’t you need SEM? 

If you’re a large company with a six, seven or even eight figure media advertising budget that will drive traffic to your website – maybe you don’t need SEM. This is because a TV or Radio ad that gives out your web address will generate hits for your website anyway. The interesting thing is, many big companies today are actually spending more on SEM than on traditional media advertising. Why? Because they’ve paid big money for research that shows that consumers have shifted to embrace online sales. It’s a fact that some of the larger companies spend more than $250,000 per month in online advertising. These are smart profitable companies that have done their research and are now reaping the rewards of intelligent SEM. Now ask yourself this… if they’re doing it – why aren’t you?

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt stated that Bing was Google’s primary competitor, not Apple or Facebook. That may come as a surprise to some, but it makes perfect sense also because search is Google’s main game after all. With Bing increasing and Yahoo decreasing in search market share, it’s little wonder Google is taking Bing seriously. 

What does this mean for SEO and SEM and how will it change the way we optimise our pages and campaigns in the future? Obviously Google still rules the search engines in Australia with a combined 92.61% market share, but this opinion from the head of Google should serve as an early warning for digital marketers who may eventually have to start paying more attention – and search dollars – to Bing.

So a question for digital marketers is; What is your current percentage of paid search spend across the search engines and how often will you review that? I think this highlights that a ‘set and forget’ SEM strategy may not be appropriate over the longer term. Your thoughts welcome.
